Founded in 1989, Wilderness Watch is the only national organization
whose sole focus is the preservation and proper stewardship of lands
and rivers already included in the National Wilderness Preservation
System (NWPS) and National Wild & Scenic Rivers System (NWSRS).
The organization grew out of the concern that while much emphasis
is being placed on adding new areas to these systems, the conditions
of existing Wilderness and rivers are largely being ignored. We believe
that the stewardship of these remarkable wild places must be assured
through independent citizen oversight, education, and the continual
monitoring of federal management activities. |

Our
Wilderness Defense & Stewardship Program challenges
the degradation of wilderness resources that has become all too common
and accepted in proposed wilderness management plans, national agency
policies, and in how our Wilderness heritage is managed on a daily
basis. Ranging from working with agency personnel to address management
challenges to legally challenging blatant violations of law, this
program puts our mission into action by halting the degradation of
wilderness values and upholding the spirit and intent of the Wilderness
Act.
Our
Outreach & Education Program strives to inform and
involve our members, other organizations, and activists in Wilderness
management issues. Just as it took citizen activists to build the
Wilderness system we have today, it will take citizen activists
to ensure that these Wilderness areas are preserved for the long-term.
This program helps inform and engage others in participating in
the management decisions that shape the future of our Wilderness
system.
